Left Wing and Right Wing Politics, Where are You?

Political views and attitudes are often categorized as either being left or right wing politics. To the best of my knowledge (Google, Wikipedia and a book) the right being; those who support political or social or economic conservatism, those who believe that things are better left unchanged. The left being; those who support varying degrees of social or political or economic change designed to promote the public welfare.

Wanting clarification to where I fit in on the political spectrum, I began searching for online Tests. I did a pretty comprehensive test at http://www.politicalcompass.org/test, (six pages, taking around five minutes). Being liberal minded (mostly) my test results were as expected placing me on the left but not far from the right which technically make me a centrist; a person who takes a position in the political centre. The test even gives you a visual graph and shows you where you fit in compared to political figures from around the world (the world figure’s position is anticipated by a panel of “experts”).

Overall a interesting test, take the test and see where your views place you.

Hello there

You may be interested in taking my test here: http://www.okcupid.com/tests/take?testid=16378307404171364367

Despite the frivolity of the host site, the test itself is serious. It differs from other on-line tests in that it compares philosophical statements rather than opinions on topical issues.

Feedback welcome.

Daniel

These tests seem to be too generalized in their questions. There are many questions that one would answer quite differently based upon what the prevailing ethos of ones government and culture. For instance, while I believe that the state can have a role in fostering morality, it would be based on a progressive agenda, rather than a socially conservative one. The questions seemed to suggest that if you had progressive social beliefs that you also had to have a libertarian perspective on what the states role in these questions should be. Also, in the one supposedly based upon "philosophical" questions, there is a clear bias in the wording of the questions towards a moderate libertarian sort of perspective.

One thing the test were able to get in my case was a far-left economic perspective, but did a less good job in pinning down my authoritarian/libertarian perspectives.
